Commission approves ‘Oktoberfestbier’ as a new protected geographical indication

The Commission approved a new Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) from Germany: ‘Oktoberfestbier’, reported Ag-Press.eu platform.

The beer production process, which takes place in the city of Munich, begins with the crushing of the malt and maceration and ends with a storage period of approximately four to 11 weeks during which the young beer naturally enriches itself with carbon dioxide and matures until it has acquired its final taste. One of the particularities of beer is the use of water drawn from deep sources in the city of Munich, starting in tertiary strata (up to about 250 m deep).

The reputation and special characteristics of ‘Oktoberfestbier’ are due to a traditional production method grown over the centuries and the extraordinary renown of Munich’s Oktoberfest, which takes place every year between mid-September and the beginning of October. It begins with the first cask of ‘Oktoberfestbier’ being allowed by the Oberbürgermeister. the current worldwide renown of ‘Oktoberfestbier’ is based, among other things, on the fact that, in Munich, innovations were introduced at an early stage in the brewing process, which had a decisive influence on the quality of the beer. The fact that ‘Oktoberfestbier’ is brewed especially for Oktoberfest has greatly contributed to the exceptional reputation of this beer. It is a product of vedette, ‘Oktoberfestbier’ is also sold worldwide under the label ‘Oktoberfestbier’.

This new name will be added to the list of 1 598 agricultural products already protected. The list of all protected geographical indications can be found in the eAmbrosia database. More information is available online on the quality schemes website and on our GIView portal.
